Identity Challenges

The way we view ourselves effects everything. It impacts what we do, say and think. How we interpret others behavior and what options we see for ourselves. If you have ever seen a small dog barking as though it thought it was a big dog, you know what I’m talking about. And if you have ever seen a big dog cower in the face of a small dog, you know identity issues can lead to pretty miserable living. We act according to who we believe we are. You can try to change from the outside in, change your actions to change who you are, to achieve peace and self-acceptance. But that may quickly lead to obsessive arrogance with your performance or nagging shame at your inadequacy. Instead, how about inside out living? How about, recognizing the truth of who you are, the truth of your great value and simply living out your real and glorious identity? No charade, not being fake, no performance. Be free to be you.

Family of Origin

Our families can give us great gifts, but also great challenges. We learn in the crucible of the family about who we are, who we are supposed to be and how to go about accomplishing that. We learn unwritten rules and invisible roles and obligations. We learn how the world works and how we need to respond to that world.
Sometimes what we learn is wrong. Sometimes we get the wrong message about who we are, how the world is and how we need to respond in life. Fortunately, the truth never changes, and it is never too late to learn how to live your life the way you were meant to – free, content, empowered.

Low Self-Esteem / Poor Self-Worth

When you don’t like yourself, fundamentally, you are likely believing that you are no good – or not much good anyway.
That is a lie.
How such a lie got there, can happen in a number of different ways. A family member could have said or done something , maybe the culture through tv/radio/magazine covers, or society and all the imperfect people in it – any or all of these could have impacted your self-image. But as important as knowing where and how the mud got slung onto your self-worth is, what is more important is knowing reality, and that reality doesn’t change.
Because in reality, the truth is, you are astonishingly valuable and have the opportunity to change the world for the better in a way no one else ever could before you or will be able to after you. You are singular, you are loved, you are a masterpiece.
When the Lord God of the universe speaks, it helps to pay attention. He says He made you, and He made you God-like. That is a pretty good start. When the Lord God of the universe acts, then we really ought to pay attention. God looked at you, measured your worth and then stepped off His throne and died for you – because He decided you were worth it.
Don’t live trapped by a lie when you don’t have to.

Spiritual Struggles

Statistically, persons with a vibrant faith live healthier more fulfilled lives. However, just as when we face struggles in our physical or social life, spiritual struggles can feel debilitating – like our confident energy for life has been zapped.
Spiritual struggle can take many forms. You may have experienced spiritual abuse or mistreatment from an individual or even whole community. You may struggle reconciling the promises and encouragement of the bible with your daily life experience. You may struggle reconciling your upbringing and personal views with what you find the bible to be saying. You may find yourself not living up to your own morals and beliefs, and be questioning the spiritual implications. You may struggle with a feeling of distance, insignificance or rejection from God.
Whatever the nature of your ‘dark night of the soul’, know that it is a “dark night” and does not have to be dark forever. I will walk with you, and together we will break through to the other side.
We were made for relationship. You were not meant to struggle alone. Ever.
Be brave, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,” – 2 Corinthians 4:17
